When to Visit Mallorca

The sailing season in the Balearic Islands runs from April to October, where one can all but guarantee hot and dry weather, with high temperatures between 19C and 30C. The shoulder seasons can be distinctly mild, with fewer crowds, although anyone hoping to avoid the rain should avoid the early winter (particularly October - December) when the bulk of the islands’ rain falls.

The Balearics come alive with festivals in the spring and summer with some of Europe’s most chaotic and vivid music festivals. Though the intriguing San Joan celebrations light up Mallorca’s beaches with bonfires and open-air concerts, ideal for travellers looking for a healthy hit of local culture on their sailing trip to the Balearic Islands.

Sailing Conditions

Most charters begin in the Balearics’ only city: Palma de Mallorca and follow a luxurious trail of bays and beaches via glitzy marinas and charismatic port towns. A Mallorca yacht charter is the best way to explore the islands, from the sandy beach at Es Trenc to chic Santa Eulalia. The Gregal winds blow with a cooling gentility during the height of the season (April to October), useful when the sun hits its peak average of 30C, and while winds can sometimes bring a slight wave or two in the winter, the summer seas are rarely anything more than placid, therefore ideal for all skill levels.

Early Season

The winter rains have all but subdued by April, dried by the common northwest winds as the lush island vegetation begins to take hold. But the waters remain ever so slightly inhospitable with the remnants of the winter chill until the spring takes hold, though the cool winters and pleasant early springs lend themselves particularly well to hiking and cycling far from the crowds of a Balearic summer.

Peak Season

The summer brings a new speed of life to the Balearics, with the tourist season kicking off with a symphony of heat, seasonal openings and packed beaches. The warm turquoise water often reaches into the mid-20s are ideal for swimming, scuba diving, wakeboarding and more, and the sun, with its long daily performance is the perfect partner out on the deck of a bareboat yacht charter.

Late Season

The first signs of autumn come in September when the temperatures begin to drop to a low of 16C by the beginning of October and the armies of sails in the lively Ibiza Marina begin to thin to little more than a group. Cycling remains popular on Menorca throughout the year and autumn is perhaps the most ideal time to explore the dramatic cliffs of the northern coast route with a newfound cinematic freshness, brought about by the change of seasons and the diminishing crowds.
