Quite possibly the Western Mediterranean's most overlooked yacht charter destination, Ibiza is a simply stunning place for a tranquil boat rental, surrounded by deserted coves, sandy beaches and impossibly turquoise waters.

Just a single mention of Ibiza conjures images of 24-hour beach club parties watched over by some of the world's best-known DJs as well as stunning white sand and, for those in the know, miles upon miles of tranquil countryside and coastline.

Pick from sailing yacht, catamaran or motor yacht to explore this gorgeous Balearic Island's many charms, uncovering scenic trails through pine-clad interiors, sipping wine in the UNESCO-listed Dalt Vila, and sailing the secluded and beautiful north coast to find unbroken views of the Mediterranean Sea from the scenic heart of a peaceful cove.

Most charters start from San Antonio on the White Isle's NW coast, but if you're seeking out that more flamboyant, glitzy party persona of Ibiza, then begin your yacht charter in Ibiza Town (from Marina Botafoch or Marina Ibiza) or Santa Eulalia del Rio to experience the centuries of transformation that these towns have undergone under the influence of the Moors, the Spanish and the clubbers stood in a pool.

Sail away from the raucous confluence of history and modernity and flutter your sails in the direction of the sublime north coast, sailing along typically tranquil Mediterranean sea waters and to heavenly sandy beaches curving in and out of the rugged coast and ascending to lushly carpeted hillsides.

Where to sail in Ibiza

An idyllic Mediterranean location and an island of multiple personalities: party monster, elated beach lover and laidback bohemian chic combine to create one of Europe's best sailing destinations. Begin with Ibizan antiques in the delightful Dalt Vila. Trace the Romans, Moors and Phoenicians from Ibiza Castle and its striking Mediterranean vistas to the incredibly thick city walls, and find modern Spain in a small but growing collection of Michelin-starred restaurants in town. Travel two kilometres from Ibiza Town to Talamanca to explore a busy boardwalk populated by charming cafes and seafood restaurants, and see the bohemian side of Ibiza at Punta Arabí, the hippy market just outside of Saint Eulalia.

Weigh anchor and sail from powdery white sands into the azures that fringe the craggy coastline: sail into the shallow choppy waters at Cala Llenia or throw an anchor into the deep blue depths at Portinatx or bohemian Benirrás and snorkel at unspoilt Cala d’Hort. Es vedra is a pleasant tiny anchorage, Port de Sant Miguel combines stretches of fine champagne-hued sand with the cool air of the mountains, and Sant Antoni's colourful underwater world is ideal for divers and snorkelers.

The nearby island of Formentera is a popular destination for mega yachts, offering pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a laid-back atmosphere that is perfect for luxury yacht charters. From the south of Ibiza, it's a short picturesque crossing to Formentera's fields of wild rosemary and naturists gathered on exquisite lengths of salt-white sand. You'll find fewer hotels, fewer cars, quieter nightlife, and bounds of opportunity for serene sailing and easy days of barefoot luxury in the stunning western Mediterranean.

Sailing Conditions

Ibiza enjoys an abundant 300 days of sunshine every year and is, like much of the Mediterranean, an easy-going sailing destination perfect for beginners, with direct lines of sight and few weather issues that could cause any real dangers.

The sailing conditions in Ibiza can vary depending on the time of year, but overall the island offers generally favorable conditions for sailors.

Summer: During the summer months, from June to September, the weather in Ibiza is warm and sunny, with temperatures averaging around 25°C. The winds are generally light, with a prevailing easterly wind called the Levante, which provides ideal conditions for sailing.

Autumn/Spring: During the autumn and spring months, from April to May and October to November, the weather is milder, with temperatures averaging around 20°C. The winds can be more variable during these months, with some strong gusts, but overall the conditions are still favourable for sailing.

When to visit Ibiza

Ibiza's resorts and beaches are full by August when the mercury hits the late 20s, but much of the island's interiors, and the rural beaches of the north coast welcome only a trickle of tourists compared to Ibiza Town. Regardless of why you're visiting Ibiza: for the beaches, eclectic island topography or the charming villages that freckle much of its coast, the island is attractive for most of the year, though water temperatures plummet somewhat during the winter months.

The summer sailing season opens with a colourful regatta in May, with a race along the coasts of Ibiza and Formentera, while July's Dia del Carmen celebration sees boats loaded with a Virgin Mary and bundles of flowers take part in cheerful water processions from Ibiza Town, San Antonio, Es Cubells and Portinatx.

Early Season

The late winter months are the wettest in Ibiza (though still dry by Mediterranean standards) with modest heat, but as March blurs into May, spring makes an appearance with wildflowers colouring the islands' interiors.

Peak Season

Summers in Ibiza are legendary, with heat always in the high 20s or early 30s and beaches packed with sun worshippers, club lovers and everything in between. Sailors can take advantage of the cool Poniente wind from the southwest as it meets the warmer Levant from the southeast, creating ideal conditions for sailing Ibiza and the rest of the Balearics.

Late Season

By October Ibiza has cooled down bringing slight breezes in the evening but the island remains a delightful sailing destination, particularly for travellers intending to explore its lush interiors. Where Japan has its sakura and Provence its Lavender, Ibiza has almond trees with exquisitely pretty pink flowers taking over the countryside between December and February.
