Rhodes Highlights

Rhodes' old streets have history running along their cobbles. Alleyways decorated by lush flower baskets and trees lead to antique fortifications hiding beaches and red-roofed tavernas. Gothic church towers mingle with the medieval palaces of Knights and the evocative minarets of mosques puncture delicate blue skies.

Craft a sailing itinerary that takes you along the scenic eastern coast of Rhodes from the old town to the acropolis-topped bay at Lindos and your route will be elevated by sultry lengths of white sands licked by the eternal Aegean, brought to life by a scintillating nightlife in the evenings in towns like Faliraki.

Sail into the protected inlet at Anthony Quinn Bay for a picturesque lunch or a spot of snorkelling, or continue south to pretty Afandou Beach. Sail a little closer to land to see the medieval ruin of Feraklos Castle as you sail along the fringes of the quaint resort town at Charaki, and, in the distance, the vast hilltop acropolis towering over the well-protected bay Lindos should now sweep into sight.

You can easily reach the entire Dodecanese from Rhodes' primary Mandraki Harbour. Sail slowly into the stunning Gialos port on Symi to see the neo-classical mansions, built by local sea sponge merchants in the 19th century, cascading in vivid rainbows down a hilly interior. The streets here are alive with a certain cosmopolitan flare, offset by a vivid old-world opulence that's best explored on foot.

Ascend from the port, past the fish market (Symi's shrimps are some of the best in Greece, served fried in the local tavernas) and the 19th-century clocktower to Kali Strata, home to luxury boutiques and chic cafes, and onwards to Horio and Kastro for sublime hilltop vistas of the Aegean. Sail out from Gialos to explore Symi's awe-inspiring beaches at Dysalona, Nanou and Fokospilia.

Sail your yacht charter across the Aegean from Rhodes to cosmopolitan Kos island to see its fabled old town, guarded by a castle and marked by a distinctive collection of Hellenistic and Roman ruins.

From here sail to Patmos for tranquil days spent on near-empty beaches, exploring caves with links to St John the Divine, and spotting the iconic 500-year-old Patmos windmills, one of which has been converted to provide electricity for the island.

Alternatively, sail to the cinematic fringes of Karpathos where villages like Olympos cascade in pastel-shaded steps to the sea, concealing a unique Greek culture, with a dialect still coloured by Dorian Greek and locals dressed in delightful traditional dress serving unique bread and cheeses that can be found nowhere else on earth.

When to visit Rhodes

With 300 days of sunshine and long dry summers, Rhodes is ideal for beach lovers travelling for long uninterrupted days of sun. Travel between June and September for guaranteed sunshine, and opt for either May, September, or October if you'd prefer to avoid the peak season crowds.

Water conditions around the islands are brilliant for swimmers and watersports lovers, although windy days can lead to beach closures, better suited to hikes in the interiors.

On Rhodes, a calendar of cultural events fills the dates between June and September with everything from film and music festivals to the Medieval Festival and the traditional feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, a national holiday throughout Greece.

Early Season

Rhodes has mild sailing conditions in the early season, with light winds, and warm days with a bit of an evening chill. But by May, the weather settles above 20c, and the Meltemi begins to blow. Spring is a good time for walking with less intense heat than summer, and the early season is particularly ideal for anyone hoping to avoid the summer crowds.

Peak Season

The peak sailing season in Rhodes is between July and August, with hot dry weather in the early and mid-30s. And while Rhodes and the Dodecanese are generally good for novice sailors the Meltemi winds, aggravated by atmospheric pressure differences between Europe and Africa, blow a little heavier in the summer season, reaching intense speeds of 120km/h at their worst, and can present some issues for those not familiar with them. For the avoidance of doubt, hand the Helm to an experienced local captain for breeze-free sailing.

Late Season

Rhodes' peak season begins to dwindle in terms of both visitor numbers and heat by late September, and by October the weather is altogether milder, with summery blue skies still dominating well into the end of autumn.

Sailing conditions in Rhodes

Due to their southern location, Rhodes and the Dodecanese islands are blessed with some of Greece's warmest weather. They are blessed with a longer sailing holiday season than most of the Mediterranean Sea - it heats up in early May and stays warm right through to October, when the water is at its best.

Summer is hot and dry with around 300 days of sunshine per year, ideal for swims in the Aegean. On hotter days, the occasional gust of the northern Meltemi winds (from May onwards) can be heavenly, and less intense than on northern islands such as Mykonos.
