When to visit Australia

Australia offers excellent sailing opportunities year-round due to its vast coastline and diverse climates. However, the best time for sailing depends on the region you'd like to explore.

The Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef are perfect between May and October to avoid the cyclone season.

The best time to visit Sydney and New South Wales is between November and March in the summer season.

Melbourne and Victoria are best between December and February where you can expect warm weather and steady breezes heading towards Bass Strait.

Whitsundays

Just off the coast of Queensland and clustered like emeralds atop the turquoise Coral Sea, the 74 Whitsunday Islands are some of Australia's most stunning destinations for a yacht charter.

Sheltered by the Great Barrier Reef, and alive with corals and marine life, the Whitsunday islands are excellent for diving and snorkelling. Keep an eye open for the dolphins that frequent the area!

But the ideal southeast trade winds and the sumptuously warm calm waters of the Pacific Ocean are absolutely ideal for a sailing holiday, home to countless white sand beaches, lush indented bays and languorous walking trails that lead through some of Australia's oldest archaeological sites and to enchanting vistas of the islands.

Fly to Hamilton Island Airport on Hamilton Island or Whitsundays Coast Airport on the mainland to embark on an unforgettable sailing trip of the Whitsundays Islands. Sail the stunning Coral Sea, exploring Australia's awe-inspiring Great Barrier Reef, in between anchorages in tranquil inlets, days on beguiling white sand beaches, and days on Hamilton Island enjoying paddle boards and rainforest hikes.

Sailing conditions in Australia

While each season in the Whitsundays has something different to offer sailors, with its confluence of light winds, perfectly amiable weather and long languid days rarely interrupted by rain, September is the best time for a yacht charter in the Whitsundays.

The sub-tropical climate is ideal for sailing year-round, with humid summers and warm winters, temperatures from 22 to 33 degrees as well as consistent water temperatures, perfect for swimming for most of the year.

Early Season

The early sailing season in the Whitsundays begins in Winter between June and August.

Temperatures at this time are generally in the early to mid-20s and while there's very little rain to worry about, the breezy evenings, cooled by the reliable south-easterly trade winds are cool enough to warrant a few jumpers in your suitcase.

Nature lovers are particularly well-served (and delighted) by the arrival of pods of humpback whales for the mating season.

Peak season

The Whitsundays' high season is in the Spring when the Trade Winds mellow considerably and the temperatures rise to averages of 26-30 degrees with the least amount of rainfall, bright clear blue skies permeating across the islands and very low humidity.

September is the busiest month for yacht charters but October and November are just as good, with light winds and a beautifully calm ocean making sailing the Whitsundays a delight for most competency levels.

Late season

By December, The Whitsundays' average temperatures have nudged up by a few degrees to the early 30s ºC and while this is officially the wet season, there are only a few days of wet weather to worry about, generally affecting the odd afternoon, and soon broken up by clear skies and sunshine.

At this time, rainforest hikes to seasonal waterfalls and anchorages in calm bays are ideal, but sailors visiting in February and March should remain vigilant of Stingers (box jellyfish and Irukandji), and wear a stinger suit when entering the water.
