Motor along any of Turkey's shores and you'll be met with languorous sandy beaches fringing heavenly azures, fractured cliffs concealing sheltered bays with mysterious caves ideal for exploration, mountainous landscapes hiding ancient ruins within lush pine forests, and fertile countryside punctuated by ancient castles, groves of olives and hills tanned by red grapes awaiting their transformation into Çalkarası or Karasakız wine.

Island hoppers are well-served with easily-sailable islands belonging to both Turkey and Greece, with glimmers of emerald poking up as striking conical masses fringed by beaches and yachts at Suluada and with a particular Grecian charm at Bozcaada Island.

Where to sail in Turkey

Motor into Bodrum's chic marina for a trove of pretty streets filled with bars, boutiques and busy restaurants and join the flow of visitors on a tour of the town's antique sights, strolling beneath evocative minarets, and ancient ruins, culminating at the picturesque Bodrum Castle where timeless Aegean Sea vistas await.

Sail the Gulf of Gokova to the idyllic Sedir Island and its seashell beach and indulge in a lunch stop with the island's unspoiled interiors as a unique backdrop. Take your charter yacht south to Marmaris' breathtaking natural harbour and visit the bazaar, the Anfiteatro di Marmaris, the Marmaris National Park and a delightful marina full of Turkish Gulets, elevated by views of the pine-clad mountains across the bay.

A Motor Yacht charter in Marmaris is a perfect option for sailing trips along the Turquoise Coast sailing east to Fethiye, Olympos and Antalya. Here, the landscape morphs from crystal clear waters to craggy coves, tranquil fishing villages to raucous beach parties fuelled by Raki cocktails, with days punctuated by swims in bays cradled by ancient cliffs and Greek day trips to nearby islands such as Rhodes.

Swing your motor yacht into an anchorage in stunningly shapely bays like Ölüdeniz for snorkelling and swimming in an appealing shielded lagoon with the salient Babadag Mountains looking on, or seek out an unmarked island shelter for a night of serenity beneath the stars.

Luxury Motor Yacht Charter Turkey

Embark on a luxury Motor Yacht charter in Turkey for an unforgettable sailing holiday that integrates comfort, style and adventure. Inside a motor yacht such as a Swift Trawler 47, elegant cabins are finished to impeccable standards, providing a good amount of space for large groups of 8, with large social spaces, ideal for onboard dinners and sunbathing.

Take along a skipper on your Motor Yacht charter to allow for a greater degree of safety and security on your Turkey sailing trip. Your local skipper can plan your route based on your preferences: whether you're seeking out secluded coves close to the nightlife of Marmaris, or long whimsical sails across the Aegean Sea's numerous idyllic islands, anything is possible.

Independent sailors should opt for a bareboat Motor Yacht charter in a boat like a Bavaria S40 Coupe. Smaller boats are particularly well-suited to traversing the craggy-indented Lycian coast between Fethiye and Ölüdeniz, squeezing between thin islets and hovering over shallow waters for staggeringly clear underwater views. Roma the east Mediterranean Sea, from scenic bays in Uzunyurt to the coves of Sarıgerme, and leave Turkish waters to visit the intrigue-filled island of Rhodes in the Greek Dodecanese, en route to the pretty bays and coves that shape the Datca Peninsula.

Sail west of Marmaris to the Bozburun Peninsula for unspoiled villages, authentic Turkish cuisine, historical sites and a raw Turkish coast indented by an uncommonly attractive collection of bays. Stop at Ciftlik bay for a stunning curve of a beach sheltered by lush conical mountains, the fjord-like ambience of Ciftlik bay, the tranquil Ada Bogazi where an undulation of coasts from 3 separate islands offers a wondrous choice of beaches, and finally the charming village of Selimiye for some of the region's best seafood and meze restaurants.

From here, sail your catamaran charter to the Datça Peninsula's rugged west coast and the sublime Datca town, where a cobblestone village turns into a cobblestone path named the Sandy Way (Kumluk Yolu) that leads a flowery promenade along numerous family-owned restaurants, each with calming sea views and water-soundtracked al fresco tables. En route, make a stop at the attractive Greek island of Symi, where colourful Venetian houses, frescoed walls and clock towers encircle a pretty harbour.

When to sail in Turkey

Turkey's boating season is long, beginning in April and lasting well into November. Summers are hot and dry, almost arid in some areas, but with cool shoulder seasons and very little rain to dampen a day's sail. The peak crowds arrive in June, July and August when the temperatures hover in the early to mid-30s.

Package holidays generally send the crowds to Marmaris and Bodrum, but the Bozburun Peninsula is usually quieter and ideal for seafarers with a penchant for hunting out solitude. Experienced sailors will have encountered the Meltemi breezes across the eastern Mediterranean Sea, but novice sailors should opt for a crewed Motor Yacht charter or limit their sailing to the Bodrum peninsula and its numerous short sails, easily explored from glitzy marinas such as Yalikavak.
