Where to go in the Caribbean
With such a wide expanse of Caribbean sea to explore, you're spoilt for choice whether a bareboat charter or fully crewed mega yacht charter.
The sprawling Caribbean Virgin Islands are a spectacular place to spend a week, and can broadly be split into US, British and Spanish Virgin Islands.
Charter from Saint Vincent or the Lesser Antilles and explore the Windward island chain, or head out from Antigua or St Barth to discover the Leeward Island group.
St Martin
Start your yacht charter in St Martin to experience the blue bays and raucous nightlife of Sint Maarten (the southern Dutch side of the island) and the comparatively tamer Saint-Martin (the northern French side) with its elegant atmosphere dominated by luxury boutiques and upscale restaurants serving an exquisite mix of French-Caribbean fare.
From here a litany of bays and white sand beaches are easily explored by boat, and uninhabited islands such as Tintamarre allow for lavish days spent far away from the crowds, with excellent scenic hiking opportunities as well as staggeringly pretty sea views best utilised as breathtaking background for an island picnic cooked up by your yachts onboard chef.
Antigua
For inland cultural adventures, a visit to St Kitt's & Nevis is a must: tour St Kitts on a one-hundred-year-old sugarcane train to see the Brimstone Hill Fortress and enjoy enthralling views of Mount Liamuiga from the train’s open deck, before jumping over to Nevis to walk the charming colonial capital of Charlestown.
With its 300+ coral bays, unbroken reef wall, secluded coves, exotic wildlife and incredible sandy beaches, Antigua makes an excellent spot for an extended trip. Choose to explore by water to dive the flourishing pink corals, kayak to hard-to-find bays for wild swimming and land exploration, and learn to kite surf at Jabberwock Point. Drop anchor and head inland for colourful villages, mountain hikes and some of the Caribbean's best foodie spots in St John's.
British Virgin Islands
Explore each British Virgin Island, beginning at Virgin Gorda for white sand beaches at Devil's Bay and to see the Baths, a veritable maze of beach boulders that form a series of pools and grottoes. Walkers should hike Gorda Peak in the north for dizzy vistas of the surrounding islets. Next, head into a secluded moor at Anegada Island, and try a cocktail at one of its downbeat beach bars.
Beach lovers should plot a course for Guana Island's seven white sandy beaches, while walkers will be well-served by more than 850 acres of tropical forests, mountains and valleys. Divers on the other hand should trace the languid outlines of the Rhone Marine Park to dive the atmospheric steamer wreck that sank in 1867.
Saint Vincent and Grenadines
Charter a motor yacht in busy St Vincent to explore the Grenadines, an attractive chain of 32 lush and unspoiled islands, many uninhabited, and all within easy distance of one another. Drop anchor for days spent snorkelling colourful reefs, BBQing on white sand-fringed cays and for wild sheltered anchorages enhanced by a dinner party under starlit skies.
For extended Caribbean yacht adventures, sail your motor yacht to Montserrat and Guadeloupe, or motor along Dominica's striking black-sand beaches and drop anchor for days spent hiking volcanoes covered in lush rainforests. The boating season in the Caribbean runs from December to April, with days characterised by long stretches of dry, sunny weather, ideal for all abilities.
