High-end yachting is a world of extravagance, where massive vessels equipped with cutting-edge technology, lavish amenities, and top-tier services roam the seas.

The terms superyacht and megayacht are often used interchangeably, and while both represent opulent experiences, they differ in size, cost, and exclusivity.

Whether you're a yacht enthusiast, buyer, or simply curious, this article breaks down the key distinctions, helping you navigate the world of luxury yachting.

What is a Superyacht?

Superyachts are boats that are over 24 metres (80 feet long) to 60 metres (200 feet long), however, size alone is not the only definitive feature.

Superyacht charters are characterised by their luxurious features and modern technology. Often equip with various entertainment facilities, such as swimming pools, as well as water sports equipment like jet skis.

Superyachts usually fit 6 to 36 people, not including crew members. The crew ranges from 6 to 50 dependant on the ship and operational requirements.

Once a boat is over 60 metres (200 feet long) it is no longer classified as a Superyacht, as it is now a Megayacht.

What is a Megayacht?

Megayachts are boats that are over 60 metres (200 feet long), known for their high-performance engines, which allows them cover greater distances at faster speeds.

While Superyachts typically feature two to four decks, megayachts can have five or more, often including helipads, observation lounges, and full spa facilities.

They can fit between anywhere from 36 to 100+ guests, with the crew ranging from 50 to 100+ and are most likely permanently on the same ship.

How much does a Superyacht cost compared to a Megayacht?

Superyachts start from $10 million, with annual maintenance costs of 10% of the yacht’s value. They are often owned by wealthy enterpreneurs and available for charter. Superyachts can operate with relative ease, while a Megayacht demands extensive logistics.

Megayachts costs often exceed over $100 million, with maintenance costs in the millions per year. They are typically owned by billionaires, celebrities, and royalty, with only a few available for charter. Megayachts have a significantly higher fuel consumption, crew salaries, insurance, and docking fees.

The costs vary based on the size of the boat, the amenities on board, the amount of crew, the location and time of year you are sailing.

Extras can be added to the yacht charter as well which can affect the cost of the yachts.

What to Expect Onboard?

Superyachts and Megayachts are designed for the ultimate luxury experience.

On board you can expect gourmet dining experience with customised menus that are tailored to your preferences and dietary requirements by renowned chefs. The meals are made with high quality local sourced ingredients.

There are a range of water toys available onboard which vary from boat to boat, these can be diving equipment, jet skis, snorkelling, wakeboards, paddleboards, kayaks, etc.

There are health and wellness services on board as well, which can range from spa services to fitness facilities.

Superyachts are often equip with jacuzzis, gyms, movie theaters, private suites. Megayachts often come with the same features as a Superyacht but can include multiple swimming pools, helicopter landing pads, personal submarines, Michelin-starred dining, and art galleries.
